Getting the proportions right
A coffee table looks best when it relates to the sofa rather than competing with it. As a general guide, around two thirds of the sofa's length works well, and a top that sits roughly level with the seat cushions keeps everything within easy reach. Leaving a comfortable gap between the two, somewhere around 40cm, means people can pass through without turning sideways.
Shape matters just as much as size. Rectangular designs suit a long sofa and a squarer room, round and oval tables soften a scheme and are kinder in a busy family space with no sharp corners, and a pair of smaller tables can be more flexible than one large piece. In a compact room, a nest of tables gives you the same surface only when you want it.
Storage, or a clean line
