Planning a room that hangs together
Layering is what stops a living room feeling flat. A coffee table anchors the seating, side tables put light and surfaces within reach of each chair, and a media unit gives the television a proper home rather than a stand. A rug underneath draws the whole group into one arrangement.
Storage is the other half of the job, and a sideboard or display cabinet takes on everything the tables shouldn't have to. In a smaller room, pieces that do more than one thing are worth prioritising: a nest of tables instead of one large coffee table, a slim console instead of a chest, a footstool that doubles as seating. Keeping legs visible and lines low helps a compact room feel more open.
