Modular
A modular sofa is bought as pieces rather than as a shape, which means the sofa fits the room instead of the room having to accommodate the sofa. How the pieces fit together
Most ranges work from the same basic vocabulary. Armless units are the building blocks that add length in the middle. One arm units close off each end, in one, two or three seat widths. A corner box turns the run through ninety degrees, and a chaise or terminal unit finishes a side with somewhere to stretch out.
The trick is to sketch the room first and count the pieces afterwards. Decide where the run needs to start and stop, whether it turns a corner, and which end wants the chaise, and the list of units follows from that. Because most pieces come left or right hand facing, it's worth being clear which way the arrangement runs before ordering.
Ranges that suit different budgets and rooms
The modular collection spans a wide spread. At the accessible end, the Heath range starts with a single armless unit, which makes building up a large arrangement over time genuinely affordable. Cartmel and Ashcroft sit in similar territory with simple, well-priced units.
At the other end, several Italian made ranges combine modularity with powered reclining, so individual seats in the run can recline independently. Where modular earns its keep
Open-plan rooms are the obvious case, because a modular group can face into the room rather than being pushed against a wall, and it can be reconfigured if the layout changes. A run of armless units with a corner box also handles a bay window or a chimney breast far better than a fixed frame.
Smaller rooms benefit differently: buying two or three units gives you a sofa sized exactly to the wall you have, with no wasted arm width.
