How to measure for a sofa
The same principles apply when choosing dining furniture.
Allow enough room for dining chairs to be comfortably pulled out and for people to move freely around the table.
As a guide, leaving generous space around your dining set creates a more comfortable and sociable dining experience.
Whether you're considering a Lindell ceramic dining table, a Houghton dining set or a family-friendly Madrid extending table, measuring first helps ensure the perfect fit.
Preparing for delivery day
A little preparation helps everything run smoothly on the day of delivery.
Before your furniture arrives:
• Remove any obstacles from the delivery route
• Move fragile items where possible
• Clear hallways and access points
• Remove pictures or mirrors from tight areas if necessary
• Ensure parking access is available where appropriate
Our White Glove Delivery team will carefully unpack, assemble and position your furniture, removing all packaging before leaving your home.

Sofa Measuring FAQs
Start by measuring the space where your sofa will sit, including the width, depth and the surrounding walkways. Then check the full access route from your front door to the room, including doorways, hallways, stairs, corners and any tight turns.
Measure both the height and width of your entrance door, including any internal doorways the sofa will need to pass through. Remember to account for door frames, handles and any fixed obstacles that may reduce the available space.
Measure the width of any hallways and pay particular attention to narrow points, corners and turns where the sofa may need to be rotated. The narrowest point of the route is often more important than the room itself.
If your furniture is heading upstairs, measure the narrowest section of the staircase and any landings or turns. Low ceilings, handrails and tight corners should also be considered before placing your order.
If you live in an apartment, measure both the lift entrance and the internal lift space. The lift needs to be large enough to accommodate the sofa once positioned for delivery, and it is also worth checking any weight restrictions within the building.
Our corner sofas and modular designs are delivered in separate sections, which can make access much easier. Always check the product details or speak to our team if you are unsure how a specific sofa is delivered.
For recliner sofas, measure the overall width and depth, but also allow extra space behind and in front of the sofa for the recliner mechanism to open fully. Many of our recliners come in separate sections too; while some models allow for removal of the arms.
If you are unsure, it is always best to speak to us before ordering. Our team can help you check key measurements, understand the delivery route and advise whether a modular or split-frame design may be more suitable.
