How to measure for a sofa

A Simple Guide to

Measuring for Your New Sofa

Finding a sofa you love is exciting. Making sure it fits perfectly into your home is just as important.

Whether you're choosing a compact 2 seater, a spacious corner sofa or a modular design made for family living, taking a few simple measurements before ordering helps ensure everything runs smoothly from the moment your new furniture arrives.

At Loom Loft, our White Glove Delivery team takes great care in delivering, assembling and positioning your furniture exactly where you'd like it.

A little preparation beforehand simply helps us make the experience as effortless as possible.

Start with the space itself

Before thinking about doorways and hallways, begin by measuring the room where your new sofa will live. Think about how you use the space every day. You'll want enough room to move comfortably around the sofa while maintaining a balanced layout with coffee tables, side tables and other furniture. When measuring, consider:

• The width of the space available

• The depth of the sofa position

• Nearby doors, radiators and windows

• Walkways through the room and existing furniture you plan to keep

A sofa should feel proportionate to the room. Too large and it can overwhelm the space. Too small and it may not provide the comfort and presence you're looking for. Accurate measurements help create a room that feels balanced and comfortable to live in.

Visualise before you buy

One of the simplest ways to understand how a sofa will sit within your room is to mark out its footprint on the floor.

Using masking tape, newspaper or cardboard, outline the dimensions of your chosen sofa.

This allows you to visualise exactly how much space it will occupy and helps you assess how the room will flow around it.

This is particularly useful when choosing larger pieces such as corner sofas, chaise sofas or modular configurations like our Pendle, Marsden and Alston collections.

Check Your
Access Route

Once you're confident the sofa will work in the room, it's important to consider how it will reach its destination.

Our delivery specialists are experienced in navigating tight spaces, but measuring key access points beforehand helps avoid surprises on delivery day.

Top Tip
To Remember

The narrowest point of your delivery route is often more important than the room itself.

Many customers focus on whether the sofa will fit in their living room, but delivery access is usually determined by the smallest doorway, hallway, staircase or corner along the route.

Before ordering, measure every access point from the entrance of your home through to the room where the furniture will be placed.

Taking a few extra minutes now can help avoid delays and ensure a smooth, stress-free delivery experience.

Larger sofas need a little more planning

Corner sofas, chaise sofas and extra-large modular configurations offer incredible comfort and flexibility, but naturally require a little more consideration when measuring.

When reviewing dimensions, make sure you account for:

• Overall width

• Overall depth

• Chaise or corner extensions

• Recliner mechanisms

Sofa bed openings

Fortunately, many modern sofas are designed with delivery in mind. Modular collections and sofas with removable sections can often make access significantly easier.

Alternative
Access Routes

In some homes, we understand access may require a little extra planning.

In these situations, delivery may be possible through patio doors, conservatories or other rear entrances where safe and appropriate.

If you have concerns about narrow doorways, staircases or other restricted access points, our team can help assess alternative delivery options before you place your order.

In rare circumstances, delivery through a large window may be the most suitable solution. Should this ever be required, we can recommend trusted local glazers who can provide advice and quotations tailored to your property.

Don't Forget

Dining Furniture

The same principles apply when choosing dining furniture.

Allow enough room for dining chairs to be comfortably pulled out and for people to move freely around the table.

As a guide, leaving generous space around your dining set creates a more comfortable and sociable dining experience.

Whether you're considering a Lindell ceramic dining table, a Houghton dining set or a family-friendly Madrid extending table, measuring first helps ensure the perfect fit.

Preparing for delivery day

A little preparation helps everything run smoothly on the day of delivery.

Before your furniture arrives:

• Remove any obstacles from the delivery route

• Move fragile items where possible

• Clear hallways and access points

• Remove pictures or mirrors from tight areas if necessary

• Ensure parking access is available where appropriate

Our White Glove Delivery team will carefully unpack, assemble and position your furniture, removing all packaging before leaving your home.

Stress-free delivery for peace of mind

Sofa Measuring FAQs

How do I measure for a sofa?

Start by measuring the space where your sofa will sit, including the width, depth and the surrounding walkways. Then check the full access route from your front door to the room, including doorways, hallways, stairs, corners and any tight turns.

Will my sofa fit through the door?

Measure both the height and width of your entrance door, including any internal doorways the sofa will need to pass through. Remember to account for door frames, handles and any fixed obstacles that may reduce the available space.

How do I measure hallways and tight corners?

Measure the width of any hallways and pay particular attention to narrow points, corners and turns where the sofa may need to be rotated. The narrowest point of the route is often more important than the room itself.

Will a sofa fit up my stairs?

If your furniture is heading upstairs, measure the narrowest section of the staircase and any landings or turns. Low ceilings, handrails and tight corners should also be considered before placing your order.

Can a sofa fit in a lift?

If you live in an apartment, measure both the lift entrance and the internal lift space. The lift needs to be large enough to accommodate the sofa once positioned for delivery, and it is also worth checking any weight restrictions within the building.

Do corner sofas come apart for delivery?

Our corner sofas and modular designs are delivered in separate sections, which can make access much easier. Always check the product details or speak to our team if you are unsure how a specific sofa is delivered.

How do I measure before ordering a recliner sofa?

For recliner sofas, measure the overall width and depth, but also allow extra space behind and in front of the sofa for the recliner mechanism to open fully. Many of our recliners come in separate sections too; while some models allow for removal of the arms.

What happens if I am unsure whether a sofa will fit?

If you are unsure, it is always best to speak to us before ordering. Our team can help you check key measurements, understand the delivery route and advise whether a modular or split-frame design may be more suitable.
