+Where a two seater earns its place
Two seaters do more than stand in for a bigger sofa. In a snug or a bay window they can be the whole seating plan. In a through-lounge, a pair set opposite each other opens up the middle of the room and keeps conversation flowing better than a single long sofa. In a larger living room they work beautifully as a companion piece, picking up the cover of a corner group or three seater and softening a corner that would otherwise sit empty.
If the room is genuinely tight, our small space living ideas are worth a browse for layouts that free up floor. Where you have a little more room to play with, our 3 seater sofas sit naturally alongside these designs.
Compact sofas, cuddlers and loveseats
The names are worth untangling. A standard two seater seats two comfortably in a fairly conventional footprint. A cuddler or loveseat is wider and deeper for its length, designed to be shared sideways rather than sat on in two neat halves, and it makes a lovely reading spot for one. Maxi and 2.5 seater versions bridge the gap towards a three seater when you want a little extra width without a big jump in length.
Our lovechairs and cuddlers page gathers the roomier one-and-a-half seat designs together, and a footstool in a matching cover is an easy way to add somewhere to put your feet up without adding a whole armchair.
Covers and coordinating pieces
Because a two seater is often bought to sit alongside something larger, cover choice matters as much as shape. Ordering both pieces in the same fabric keeps a room looking considered, and choosing a plain for the larger sofa with a texture or a deeper tone on the smaller one is a nice way to add interest without the room feeling busy. Browse our fabric sofas and velvet sofas pages to see the spread.
Several ranges run from a small sofa right up to a corner group in the same cover. The Marsden Small Sofa is a well-loved example, and the Wickham range offers a classic British-made shape with a sofa bed option across its smaller sizes.
