Tables, chairs and stools

Clearance dining tends to be strongest on seating. Side chairs, carvers and swivel chairs turn up regularly, along with counter stools and bar stools in leather, tweed and fabric. Benches appear less often but are worth watching for, since a low bench along one side of a table frees up a surprising amount of floor space.

Tables come through in smaller numbers and go quickly, usually extending designs and live edge timber tops. If a table catches your eye it is worth ringing the showroom the same day. Buying chairs in the numbers you need

The one thing to watch with clearance seating is quantity. Most chairs here are single pieces or matched pairs rather than sets of six, so if you need a full table's worth it is worth confirming how many of a given design are actually available before you commit. Showroom stock varies between branches, and the team can check across all five.

Mixing is a perfectly good answer if the numbers do not quite work. A pair of carvers at the ends of the table with four side chairs along the sides has been a standard arrangement for generations, and it looks deliberate rather than pieced together. A bench on the wall side solves the same problem with one purchase.

Matching what you already own

If you are adding to a table you already have, seat height is the measurement that matters. For a table of around 75cm, a seat height of roughly 45 to 47cm sits comfortably, and it is worth measuring the underside of your table rather than the top, since a deep apron eats into the legroom. Counter and bar stools are sized to taller surfaces and are not interchangeable with dining chairs.

Timber tones are worth checking in person rather than from a photograph, because finishes shift between production runs.
