Loom Loft Supports DIY SOS to Help Welcome Daniel Home
At Loom Loft, we believe that home is a feeling—a sense of safety, warmth, and togetherness. That’s why we were incredibly proud to support BBC One’s DIY SOS in their latest project in Freckleton, Lancashire, helping to transform the home of the Flemen family.
Daniel’s Story
In 2022, 13-year-old Daniel Flemen was living a full and active life — a scout, altar boy, school council member, and devoted Manchester City fan. But what began as flu-like symptoms quickly became something far more serious. After being rushed to hospital, Daniel was diagnosed with a low-grade glioma, a tumour in the centre of his brain.
The surgery that followed saved his life — but also caused lasting neurological damage, leaving Daniel unable to walk, talk, eat, or breathe independently at night. He’s since spent almost 3 years in hospital, unable to return home simply because his house was no longer suitable for his needs — until now.
While mum Julie has stayed by his side, living at Ronald McDonald House, dad Nigel, a mechanic, has continued to balance work and care responsibilities to keep the family going. Their strength, love and resilience are at the heart of this story.
A Community Comes Together
On 16th July, with just one week to complete the project, the DIY SOS team arrived in Freckleton with one goal: to bring Daniel home.
Supported by businesses, tradespeople, and volunteers from across the region (and beyond), the transformation began — a full redesign of the Flemens’ home to meet Daniel’s complex needs and give him the freedom and care he deserves, so he can continue his rehabilitation surrounded by love, family, and familiarity. It’s a project rooted in kindness, driven by community spirit, and a powerful reminder of what can happen when people rally around those who need it most.
As part of this extraordinary community effort, Loom Loft was proud to help shape the Flemens’ new living space, with interior designer Gordon Whistance handpicking a made-to-measure Duck Egg Blue Lucciano XL Sofa, along with two Lucciano Armchairs in Monza Bone and a custom-made footstool — all thoughtfully curated for their calming comfort. Together, these pieces will help create a warm, welcoming, and accessible environment where the family can finally enjoy meaningful moments together again.
“Daniel’s story really touched our hearts,” said Kirsty Holroyd, Senior Stores Manager at Loom Loft. “As soon as we heard about the project, we knew we wanted to do whatever we could to contribute. Helping a family come back together and turn their house into a home is incredibly meaningful — it’s exactly what Loom Loft stands for.”
Looking Ahead
The delivery took place during the final days of the build, and Loom Loft’s team was on-site to support the final moments of the renovation. Our team also had the pleasure of meeting presenter Nick Knowles, electrician Billy Byrne, and interior designer Gaby Blackman — familiar faces from the much-loved DIY SOS team. The transformation is set to feature in an upcoming episode airing on BBC One.
From everyone here at Loom Loft, we send our heartfelt love and support to Daniel, Julie, and Nigel. It’s an honour to be involved — and a reminder of the incredible things that can happen when a community comes together.
