What ends up in clearance

Clearance stock reaches us in a few different ways. Ex-display pieces have spent time on a showroom floor, which is why they are offered at a reduction. End of line designs are the last of a run, often in a cover or finish we are no longer ordering. Discontinued ranges are pieces from collections we have moved on from, and showroom one-offs are exactly that, single items that will not be repeated.

What they have in common is that the frames, fillings and upholstery are unchanged. These are not seconds or a separate budget range. The trade-off is choice rather than quality, since what you see is what is available and there is no cover or size to specify.

Browsing by room

The clearance range covers most of the house, so it is usually quicker to start with the room you are furnishing. Sofas and armchairs make up the largest share, including complete bundles where a sofa, chair and footstool are offered together as a group. Occasional pieces are the next biggest, covering coffee tables, side and lamp tables, console tables, sideboards and nests. Dining brings tables, chairs, benches and stools, and there is usually a handful of garden furniture towards the end of the season.

Start with clearance sofas and chairs, clearance dining or clearance occasional depending on what you are after. Garden clearance appears in the main menu when there is seasonal stock to move.

Buying an ex-display piece well

A few habits make clearance shopping much more satisfying. Measure the room and the access route first, because a piece bought on the day tends to be delivered sooner than a made-to-order one and there is less time to discover a problem with a stairwell. Check the described condition and dimensions carefully rather than assuming they match the current range, since finishes and sizes change between production runs.

It is also worth deciding quickly on anything you like. Clearance items are single pieces rather than stock lines, so once one has gone it will not come back. If you have your eye on something, our showroom teams can tell you which branch it is standing in and whether it is still available.

If the piece has already gone

Because clearance stock turns over constantly, the range looks different from week to week. If something has sold, the current collection often includes a direct equivalent at full price, and in a much wider choice of covers and sizes.

The Bethie range and Farrow range both appear occasionally in clearance and are available new across their full size and finish options. For pieces that are already made and ready to deliver rather than reduced, our in stock sofas and in stock dining pages are the place to look, and the full sofas and chairs, dining and living furniture ranges show everything currently in production.
