+Scaling a sofa to your living room
Proportion does more for a living room than any other single decision. As a general guide, a sofa looks settled when it fills around two thirds of the wall it sits against, leaving breathing space at either end rather than running the full width. Allow roughly a metre for walkways so the room still moves freely, and around 90-100cm between the front of the seat and a coffee table.
Measure the wall first, then work back to the size that fits. Comparing three-seaters against compact two-seaters side by side is usually the quickest way to see which proportion your room is asking for.
Arranging the room around the seating
Most living rooms settle into one of two layouts. A single long sofa facing the fireplace or television keeps sightlines simple and suits narrower rooms, while an L-shaped arrangement wraps a corner and turns the seating into the natural gathering point for family evenings.
If conversation matters as much as viewing, a pair of facing sofas or a sofa with an armchair opposite creates a more sociable square. Corner sofas are perfect for making the most of an underused corner, turning overlooked space into somewhere made for relaxing, and a modular range such as Marsden lets you set the corner where the room wants it rather than where the sofa dictates. A lovechair or cuddler can transform an awkward corner into a cosy spot to relax, while keeping the room feeling open and easy to move around.
Choosing a material for everyday living
Living rooms take daily use, so the covering matters as much as the shape. Woven fabrics bring warmth and texture and sit comfortably in a family room, velvet adds depth of colour and catches the light beautifully, and leather softens and deepens the longer you have it.
It is worth seeing and feeling the options rather than choosing from a screen. Browse sofas by material to compare, and our guide on how to choose a fabric sofa walks through what suits a busy household.
Bringing the room together around your sofa
A beautifully styled living room is about more than the sofa alone. Adding a footstool can bring extra comfort, create an informal perch when guests arrive and help soften the look of a larger sofa. An occasional chair adds another layer to the room, creating a relaxed place to sit while giving the space a little more balance and personality.
Our footstools and occasional chairs are designed to sit alongside the sofa ranges, and one with storage inside, like the Alston Storage Footstool, keeps throws and cushions out of sight. If you would rather everything speak the same language, browsing by collection keeps the room cohesive from the start.
